Mochi is a prominent snack in Hawaii, where The Happy Zombie grew up. It is a Japanese rice cake, and the designer thougth they looked like delicious displays of sweet flower bouquets.

We’ve arrived in Salt Lake City for International Quilt Market and checked in at the Salt Palace Convention Center. If you’ve never seen pictures of the Quilt Market floor, it can be overwhelming. See below for a couple of sneak peek views (the exhibits don’t actually open up until Friday morning). There are twenty nine aisles of exhibitors with 15-19 booths on each side of the aisle, with several intersecting rows for traffic flow to move across the aisles from one end to the other.

Salt Lake is nestled in between the Rocky Mountains, and there are some decent views of them from our Hotel room on both sides (Radisson).

Gone With The Wind is one of my favorite movies! I waited for years for someone to come out with this line. We have received more stock of the most popular print BY FAR - Scarlett in her green barbecue dress!

Below is a picture of the delicate green floral bouquet which is the inspiration for the dress. The color was chosen to enhance Vivien Leigh's eyes. For all you GWTW fans who don't already have this print - you had better get some for your stash before it is gone!

12 Days of Christmas Projects

We got a shipment of Fruitcake....and we're happy about it!!

Okay, maybe not THAT kind of fruitcake. This Fruitcake will make you happy when you find it in your mailbox! I'm talking about Basic Grey's follow-up to the ever so popular Figgy Pudding collection. Last summer when I saw Figgy Pudding, I just thought Christmas fabric could not be any cuter. I LOVED it. Really!

But then I saw Fruitcake and, well, Christmas fabric does get cuter. Snowmen, vintage ornaments, snowflakes, oh my! Fruitcake has delicious-sounding colors like hot cocoa, maraschino cherry, sugar cookies and spearmint. I was getting hungry just listing this stuff! And it looks even better than it sounds. The colors are gorgeous and the designs are just amazing. And the quilts I have seen made with Fruitcake - oh my. Beautiful! We are planning on at least one kit (probably two) - so keep checking with us. We are stocking the entire collection as well as all of the pre-cuts. Hurry on over for a visit and have some Fruitcake!

International Quilt Market Spring 1.0

We attended the International Quilt Market in Minneapolis, Minnesota in late May and purchased many lovely lines of fabric to share with you over the coming months. One of our favorites is Lily and Will by new Moda designers Bunny Hill Designs.

"There they were, the charming and energetic Lily and her thoughtful inquisitive brother, Will. Two total opposites, yet somehow blended together perfectly."

Unfortunately, this line is not going to be available until October- but don't you love it? This versatile line will have 36 cotton prints, two canvas prints (the blue and pink damask), four quilted texture prints, four waffle cloth prints, satin trim and four poly satin prints. There will also be quilt patterns, baby blankets, diaper bags, and baby bibs. Precut fat quarter bundles will come in pink, blue and green colorways, as will the jelly rolls and layer cakes.

Moda Scrap Bags are back in stock!

Finally! It seems like it has been forever, but these VERY popular scrap bags have now arrived back in the shop.

Not familiar with the scrap bag??

These bags contain the leftovers from Moda's production of layer cakes (all lines, including seasonal and Christmas prints). Moda swooped in and came up with a clever way to save a scrap! Each bag contain strips of 40 fabrics. Each strip varies from
2" to 4" in width. Each strip is 32" long. Each bags' strips are color coordinated. Approximately 1/2 pound of scraps. Some strips have the selvage and some do not.

Get Well, Dad!

We had a trip planned to go back to Oklahoma from 10/7 through 10/17 to visit family.
Unfortunately, the day we got there, my father had emergency surgery and had to have almost half of his stomach removed. So much for a good trip back home! He is stable now, and we're just waiting for him to wake up. It is going to be a long recovery, so we're thankful that he has had no major setbacks since the procedure. I sure have seen enough of the intensive care unit at the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City to last me for a lifetime!

I extended my trip through 10/21, so unfortunately, I still have orders from 10/6 that need to be shipped. I will start fulfilling orders in the order in which they were received on 10/22.

A warm thank you to all of you that have reached out and offered your thoughts and prayers. I appreciate it very much.

Rouenneries – a lovely collection of printed cottons and woven stripes by French General for Moda. What a name for a fabric line! If you're like me, I wondered what in the world this meant... so here's your French word lesson of the day: Rouenneries were the cotton prints printed in Rouen, France during the mid-18th century. Makes perfect sense, now, doesn't it???The inspiration for these designs are based on a collection of old prints and stripes from this era in shades of red, naturals and chocolate browns.

It is a mere 81 degrees inside this afternoon - I will try to catch up on shipping later tonight, as the low temperature overnight is 63 (please???).

We live in Portland, Oregon, but grew up in Oklahoma, so we're used to hot summers. However, we've been spoiled since we moved here in 2006. I was reading the local online newspaper here the other day - and found it amazing that in the last 20 years, it has only hit 100 degrees in July 14 times. Only 6 times in August and 4 times in June. Wow. Before we moved here, I remember having 30+ straight days of 100+ degree weather. So this week's weather is definitely out of the norm. It was 100 yesterday, 107 today and is forecast to be 105 tomorrow.

We moved here in December 2006 - it never crossed our mind to check our house for AIR CONDITIONING!!! Guess what - the house does not have air conditioning...
So here I sit in a hotel room because it is 88 degrees inside our house. Yuk. Since we run our business from our sauna (home), we aren't cutting any fabric for the next few days while it stays above 100 (it would literally be a "sweat" shop). Orders will be processed in the order that they have been received. We apologize for the delay - but it is miserable here right now!!

Chicken Enchilada Dip Recipe

Have any parties coming up where you need to take a dish? Here is one that is sure to be a hit!

This gets rave reviews and I always get MULTIPLE requests for the recipe whenever I take it somewhere!!!

CHICKEN ENCHILADA DIP
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
8 oz mayonnaise
1 (8 ounce) package shredded cheddar cheese
1 (4 ounce) can diced green chile peppers
1 jalapeno pepper, finely diced
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place chicken breasts on a medium
baking sheet.
2. Bake in the preheated oven 20 minutes, or until no longer pink.
Remove from heat, cool and shred.
3. Place shredded chicken in a medium bowl and mix in cream cheese,
mayonnaise, cheddar cheese, green chile peppers and jalapeno pepper.
Transfer the chicken mixture to a medium baking dish.
4. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the
edges are golden brown.

(Alternatively, you could boil the chicken, then shred it). Drop us a line here if you try this out - you'll be hooked!!

Astoria, Oregon

So we traveled to Astoria, Oregon for the first time over July 4th. We went to the Astoria Column - and what magnificent views all around from up there!

Simply climb 164 stairs, and voila!

We found it amazing that the river is over 4 miles wide here - that makes for a long bridge!.

The next day, we drove north across the bridge, and drove to Cape Disappointment, saw a few lighthouses, and this neat little place called dead man's cove:

Darla Rag Quilt - Free Spirit Fabric!

I have been so busy lately (read: a BIG thank you to all of you out there buying fabric to create lovely crafts with!), I haven't had much time to make any rag quilts - but I finally carved out some time this weekend and put my new Pfaff to work. After almost 8 years of sewing with my basic starter sewing machine purchased at Sears, I finally upgraded. So I REALLY wanted one of those $9,000 Viking models that does everything but pick the fabric for you, but that's another story, (and another upgrade!). I saw these at International Quilt Market in Portland and Houston this year - they are incredible!

I chose six red and blue fabrics from the Darla collection designed by Tanya Whelan, who has awesome designs. I then selected a complementary blue and white gingham for the backing. I used batting for the middle layer of this quilt, but sometimes use flannel to make the seams a little fluffier. I then spent some quality time with some snips while parked in front of the TV to rag those seams before putting it in the washer. I haven't yet broken down and used the Accucut rag quilt rag quilt set - have any of you used it before? If so, I'd love to hear from you as to how you like it - do you get the same quality as you do from hand snipping? If so, it sure would save a lot of time!!!

I am still really new to the blogging thing, but at some point, I may give away one of these rag quilts. Right now, I'm still not getting a huge amount of traffic to the blog, but at some point, when there is a lot more readers out there, it may become a reality. Would any of you care to wine one? Hooray! Swanky arrived today - and it is GREAT. Stop by and take a look!! We are excited to finally get our first Honey Buns and Turnovers with this new line.

Honey Buns are mini versions of the Jelly Roll - they consist of 40 strips of fabric 1 1/2 inches wide.

Turnovers consist of 80 precut 6" triangles.

Windham Paper Dolls fabric by Sheri Marquez is hard to find!!

OK, so we were able to get our hands on a few bolts of Paper Dolls from Windham yesterday. You know, the adorable line from Sheryl Rae Marquez? We listed it on our site around 8:30 last night. Within 30 minutes, we had already sold some. That was the start of the mad rush! By 2 pm today, the fabric we listed yesterday was all gone. Talk about popular!! Do you girls love you some Paper Dolls, or what???

Not to worry, we have ordered lots more of this fabric, but the bad news is, it is not going to be available until March... :(

We'd like to take a moment and showcase another line of fabric that we think is fantastic:

As Paula describes it, the inspiration for this fabric line was a long, lovely, luxurious month spent in Hawaii. She carried a sketchbook and camera with her and captured the breathtaking beauty of sunsets over the ocean, the cultural influences of the asian and polynesian population and natural wildlife (dragonflies, birds and butterflies are incorporated in the focus fabrics).

Fabric Matcher from Moda

Have you tried out Moda's Fabric Matcher yet? If not, you should go check it out. Here you can download your favorite pattern, select some Moda fabrics (or upload pictures/scans from your own stash) and see a finished quilt project with the fabric you have selected! Pretty neat, huh?

Membership is free - all you have to do is go to http://moda.fabricmatcher.com/ and register. Feel free to add any comments here or tips for those of you who are already experts at this!

Creating a new project with fabrics and a pattern is very easy.
1. Find a pattern for your project – In the New Project box on the left click on the Find Pattern link and search for a pattern to save into your project box. It will also tell you how many fabrics you need to fill the pattern.
2. Find fabrics for your project - Click on the Find Fabrics link at the bottom of the fabric box – browse through theme or designer, choose by color or by uploaded image. You can also upload your own photos (see our example quilts below!)
3. Each time you find a fabric you like, add it to your fabric box. This fabric will then appear in the fabric box to the left. You can save up to 15 fabrics in your fabric box.
4. Once you have added a pattern and fabrics, then click on the Create Project button
5. Click on the Add Fabric link and you can choose from your fabric box. The pattern will automatically fill up as you choose fabrics.
6. You can easily change the fabrics around by clicking on Change Fabric and then re-select the fabric to use
7. You can use the same fabric as many times in the pattern as you like
8. You can then view your completed pattern in a large picture by clicking on the enlarge button.
9. Make sure you name your project and save to your online "stash."

Here are a few examples we've played with (kits available on our web site soon). While the large pattern in the middle of the quilt is not true to scale, it gives you the general idea!

I Love Lucy - Lucy's Chocolate Factory

It's finally here! One of the funniest ladies of all time is commemorated in this line of fabric by Quilting Treasures. Lucy and Ethel enter the working world and the men take on domesticity in this well known episode of I Love Lucy. How many chocolates must have been consumed in this episode? I don't know, but I've had many laughs watching this classic show. How about you? The fabrics are represented in retro tones of mint, pink and yellow and blue.

We will be offering yardage of this fabric line at our web site and will also be selling quilt kits with the free pattern below.

We can also make you some 5" fabric squares or jelly rolls from these fabrics - shoot me an email if you are interested! I bet this line will be VERY popular - there has been some demand pent up for some I Love Lucy fabric for a while...

Pink Fig Patterns

From our last post, we talked about meeting Chelsea Anderson of Pink Fig Patterns along with her Aunt, Lila Tueller. Well, the picture below shows those two creative artists in the Pink Fig Pattern booth at Quilt Market in Houston. Don't you just love those adorable kids (how about those cute clothes, too?) We picked up the patterns for the Lily Top, Bella Pants and Olivia Top - I'm sure we'll be picking up more of these very soon!

Chelsea just listed the Quilted Castle on her blog as a place to find her patterns. We're still pretty new at this, so we appreciate the link!

Lila Tueller Designs

We got the chance to meet Lila Tueller at Quilt Market in Houston (pictured here with her talented niece Chelsea Anderson of Pink Fig Patterns). We picked up some of Lila's patterns, which we carry on our site, along with her Moda collection Woodland Bloom in the Shop By Designer category on our web site. How Lila handles being a mother of seven, a grandmother (really?), designing fabric and patterns while also owning a paint your own pottery studio is simply amazing. You rock, Lila!

Savon Bouquet is a yummy combination of beautiful fresh florals, playful polkadots and vintage french ticking stripes. Houston Quilt Market - Hurricane Damage

From the George Brown convention center where the fall version of international quilt market is held in Houston each year, you can still see many signs blown over and the telling scene downtown where the skyscrapers are still missing many windows, a month and a half after Hurricane Ike swept through town after destroying much of the gulf coast.

The weather was nice and clear while we were in town - high 70's and sunny! Much nicer weather than in Portland, Oregon where we live. In Portland, the rainy season begins in October/November and goes on through the spring time - yuk!Off to buy more fabric...

We spoke with Robyn Pandolph who lives in Galveston which was devastated by the Hurricane. Luckily for Robyn, her condo is several stories up, so she was not impacted severely like so many others in the area. I've seen some of the pictures where the beach front has been swept completely clean, and you can see sand and house foundations only. Very sad!

Robyn has a new line of fabric for RJR which debuts in February 2009 - Sumptuous Living. We'll be blogging about this fabric line at a future date -we can't wait to get it in! Here's a sneak preview of a few of the fabrics:

Quilt Market Houston Day 1

Well, here we are in Houston, for the International Quilt Market. This is our second market to attend (the first was this May in Portland, Oregon), and it is pretty amazing to see over 500 vendors selling patterns, fabric, notions and anything else that can be attributed to quilting! We had fun today talking with "Me and My Sister" designers Barbara Groves and Mary Jacobson. We love their four new patterns! The fabric used to make the quilts in these patterns is from their Oh Cherry Oh collection for Moda. We ordered some of this fabric and expect to get it in February 2009. It is so bright and cheerful - we can't wait to get it in!

Click on the patterns below to see the fabric requirements for each quilt.

1. Center of Attention - This 76" X 76" quilt uses a layer cake and a Sweet Roll, which is the new 1 1/2" strip precut fabric from Moda (it is basically a miniature Jelly Roll).

2. Cherry Turnover - This pattern makes a 54" X 54" quilt and is made from a charm pack and two Turnovers. The Turnover is brand new from Moda too - it has 6" squares cut into half square triangles which can be used with charm packs. This new product was the brainchild of everybody at the Moda U retreat.

3. Simply Sweet - This quilt is 60" X 70" and uses a Sweet Roll and Jelly Roll. Very cute!

4. Spin Cycle - This quilt is adorable! It is 72" X 78" and uses a Sweet Roll and other yardage. We will be selling kits for these patterns soon at our website.

Time to get some sleep and see some great new fabrics tomorrow!
